Sherman Park Lutheran Church was founded in 1923 at the corner of Sherman Boulevard and Center Street. The congregation quickly outgrew the original building and built the current Lannon stone church in 1923. At its peak in the 60’s, Sherman Park Lutheran Church had over 2,700 members. This led to the addition of an educational wing to meet the needs of 600 children in Sunday School, a 200 member youth choir and a youth bible class of 60. Although there are no longer as many members, the church continues to be a leader in reaching out and meeting the needs of the changing Sherman Park community.
About forty years ago, as the church congregation began to shrink from the flight to the suburbs, a daycare was started in a few of the unused educational rooms to reach out to the community. A school was added in 2007 to better serve the families around us. At that time Sherman Park Lutheran also joined with Lutheran Urban Mission Initiative, Inc. (LUMIN). LUMIN operates five schools in Milwaukee. Under their guidance, Sherman Park Lutheran School has grown from humble beginnings of sixty children to a school of over 250 students in grades K4 through 8th grade. Today, we have remained strong in our purpose. Sherman Park Lutheran is here to provide a safe, Christian school focused on educational success, leadership development and spiritual growth for the children and families of Milwaukee. Our school has a make-up of 98% African American and 2% Hispanic. We strive daily to help bring the light of God’s love to His people.
Even with the tremendous growth we have seen over the last few years, the complete package that we offer truly gets people excited. Along with strong academics, we strive to keep the arts part of daily life. With a dedicated teacher for art, music, and gym, we work to build up the entire student. Jubilee gospel choir, praise dance, and sports are also other ways that we look to expand the thinking of our students. We also work with Let’s Play Ball, a Saturday program that features 4-5 hours of tutoring by mentors from the community; life skills taught through the game of basketball; cheerleading and fellowship time. Through our partnerships, we work to get the whole family involved with the health and well-being of the entire person: body, soul and mind.
Sherman Park Lutheran School is accredited by AdvancEd, NLSA (National Lutheran Schools Accreditation) and WRISA (Wisconsin Religious and Independent School Accreditation) and a partner school of Center for Urban Teaching (CfUT), Partners Advancing Values in Education (PAVE) and Schools That Can Milwaukee.
Sherman Park Lutheran School offers worship services on a weekly basis. During this time, God's love is shared with our scholars through monthly themes. Most of the services are conducted by either Pastor Totsky or a member of the school leadership team. Once a month a classroom is responsible for leading the service. The class gets to choose how to present the topic as well as the music that will go with it. Then, the following Sunday they assist Pastor with the sermon in our Sunday morning service. Guest speakers and vocalists help to enrich and enhance the worship experience here at Sherman Park Lutheran School.
The athletic program is an extension of the Christian education provided at Sherman Park Lutheran School. It supplements the physical education curriculum, providing additional physical activity for scholars in grades 5-8 who choose to participate.
Sherman Park Lutheran School is a member of the MLESAA (Milwaukee Lutheran Elementary Schools Athletic Association).
